Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was the first female physician in Italy. She specialized in pediatric medicine and became interested in children's education. Her first school was for impoverished children in the slums of Rome. She continually observed, adapted the environment, and developed special learning tools. Her results were phenomenal! Not only were the children learning skills thought beyond their capabilities, but also had developed self-discipline, had a love for order, and worked with concentration and joy.
