The Montessori method is a comprehensive educational system, which encompasses a philosophy of child development, well-designed materials and activities, and a teaching methodology.

Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was the first female physician in Italy. She specialized in pediatric medicine and became interested in children's education. Her first school was for impoverished children in the slums of Rome. She continually observed, adapted the environment, and developed special learning tools. Her results were phenomenal! Not only were the children learning skills thought beyond their capabilities, but also had developed self-discipline, had a love for order, and worked with concentration and joy. Today there are Montessori schools all over the world for children from infancy to high school, including over 4000 in the United States.

Some cornerstones of the Montessori philosophy are:

• Children are curious, eager learners.
• Children learn best when working at their own pace.
• Children have a drive to be independent.
• Children possess an absorbent mind. They have, from birth, a natural ability to take in information and knowledge unconsciously.
• Children learn by doing.
• Children learn about the world through all their senses.
• All of a child's actions are purposeful and we need to observe them to discover what needs they are fulfilling.

At our school, Montessori means:

• Profound respect and love for each child as an individual.
• Freedom with limits – In the classroom, the children are given the freedom to make their own choices, within the boundaries of the curriculum and the expectation of respect toward others.
• Love of learning – We strive to nurture each child's innate joy and satisfaction in learning, doing meaningful work, and exploring life.
• Development of the whole child–attention is given to academic, social, and emotional growth, with an emphasis on developing inner discipline and self-confidence.
